On October 18 and 19 the last Driver’s Edge program in the Carolinas was held at the Charlotte Knights Baseball Stadium.  The program, once again, was a huge success with full programs and lots of action to see throughout the weekend.  With attendance nearing 700 the Carolinas continue to have a strong showing for the Driver’s Edge National Tour.  Special ”Thanks” for this program go out to the South Carolina Highway Patrol and the South Carolina Trucker’s Association “Know Zone” program for helping us with the Law Enforcement Module.  Lastly, a big “Thank You”, goes to the backbone of all of our programs, our volunteers, who get there early and stay late helping us set up operate and take down each and every Carolinas Driver’s Edge Events.  We are currently busy looking at our 2009 calendar and working out Spring and Fall dates.   Please stay tuned for our 2009 dates to be posted soon!

Booster Seats Questioned!

October 1, 2008 – 6:55 am

IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) has just issued a report questioning how much booster seats improve seat belt fit.  Their report states that 13 of the 41 seats tested were rated “not recommended”.  Just to be clear, all seats on the market have been  tested and all meet government crash test standards.  What is important to understand from their report is that not all car seats, including boosters, fit every child and every vehicle.  The different variations in booster seats allow parents to choose the right seat for their child.  If parents have questions or concerns they should consult a technician who will be able to make necessary adjustments or help them choose the right seat.

Below is the link to their report and we have also included their results showing you the pictures of the seats they tested and rated:

  Booster Seats are Not-One-Size-Fits-All Report

The 5 good bets provide acceptable lap and shoulder belt fit in almost as many vehicle belt configurations as the best-bet boosters

The 10 best bets are the most likely to position lap and shoulder belts correctly on many children in many cars, minivans, and SUVs.

The 13 not-recommended boosters don’t position lap and shoulder belts for optimal protection. Twelve leave the lap belt on the abdomen, and 1 positions the lap belt too far forward on the dummy’s legs.

BEST BET EXAMPLE: Graco TurboBooster
Shoulder belt — at midshoulder | Lap belt — flat on thighs

NOT RECOMMENDED EXAMPLE: Cosco Alpha Omega Elite
Shoulder belt — too far out on shoulder | Lap belt — on abdomen

ARE YOU READY TO DRIVE?

September 9, 2008 – 1:10 pm

Are you ready to drive?  That is the question being asked by many experts in the field of teenage driving.  Sixteen has been the golden age for many years when teenagers and their parents drive down to the Department of Motor Vehicles to take their written and driving test to hopefully emerge with a shiny new piece of plastic with their picture and the magic words Driver’s License!  This week, a research group is proposing that we change this long standing rite of passage.

Adrian Lund, president of the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, a research group funded by the auto insurance industry, acknowledged the idea is “a tough sell,” but noted that car crashes are the leading cause of death among teenagers.

“The bottom line is that when we look at the research, raising the driving age saves lives,” Lund said. He plans to present the proposal Tuesday at the annual conference of the Governors Highway Safety Association in Scottsdale, Ariz.

I know that I have personally met many teenagers who were ready to drive at 16 and many who were not.  Who’s responsibility is it to determine when a teenager is ready to drive?  It’s a tough question and is there a right answer?
