Greensboro Driver’s Edge Program Breaks Attendance Record

May 6, 2008 – 7:49 am

On Saturday April 26 and Sunday April 27, Driver’s Edge rolled into town for it’s fifth North Carolina program.  The program was held at the Greensboro Coliseum and broke the all time attendance record in Driver’s Edge national program history!  When registration opened for the program on March 28 it took all of 45 minutes to fill all sessions and as of the program weekend, there were more than 200 teenagers on the wait list wanting to get into the program.

We simply could not have done this program if it had not been for the tremendous financial support of State Farm, the donation of vehicles from Flow Motors, the Greensboro Police Department, who operated our law enforcement module and the Greensboro Fire Department, who kept our skid pad nice and wet.  Some new pieces added this year was the No-Zone truck simulation, operated by Old Dominion trucking in conjunction with the NC trucker’s association and a simulated police stop where the Greensboro police department educated teens and parents on what to expect from the officers if/when they were to ever get pulled over and what the officers expect from them as well. Effects of not using seat belts and child car seats properly

March 4, 2008 – 5:49 am

Virginia’s multi-disciplinary crash investigation team released several in-depth reports that discuss the importance of correctly restraining children in safety seats.  Specific reports, such as “Special Report Number 20: Child Safety Restraint Study” and “Report Number 203: Two Single Vehicle Crashes—Multiple Fatalities” talk about eight crashes in which 10 children were killed.  In two of the deaths, the chest straps of the safety seats became entangled around the children’s necks because they were not properly secured in their restraints.  In another crash involving a booster seat, the vehicle’s shoulder strap was not used correctly and the child received fatal head, back and torso injuries. This crash is in ”Report 198: Aggressive Drivers in Merging Lanes—Triple Fatality.” These reports are available at the following Web sites:

Our Children Should Not Be Dying;
Be Part of the Solution

January 23, 2008 – 8:26 am

Car CrashThe makeshift memorial drew gasps from every driver who passed. A red football jersey hung over a homemade white cross; a small brown teddy bear leaned against the base. A framed photo of a handsome couple at prom sat nestled in a cheerleader’s pom-pom. A yearbook lay open on the ground. Nearby, groups of teenagers intermittently hugged and sobbed … stopping occasionally to kneel at the spot where their friends died the night before. And the tree - the gash still fresh - stood as a stark reminder of a tragedy that could have been prevented.

In a funeral home on the other side of town, a mother sat quietly in a cold room … waiting for family to arrive. It had been her worst nightmare … a knock at the door, a police officer, the look of dread in his eyes. She knew almost instantly. Now there were plans to make. “What kind of casket should I choose?” “Which cemetery?” And, there were plans to cancel … a dentist appointment, a trip to the beach, college applications.
